Because compostable packaging only works if the customer can actually compost it. In the UK, fewer than 12% of local authorities collect compostable packaging. Compostable packaging that ends up in landfill behaves like normal plastic — no benefit, higher cost, broken sustainability promise.

Compostable IS the right choice for: tea bags, coffee pods, food-contact wrappers, fresh produce labels — situations where the packaging is contaminated with food and cannot enter a paper recycling stream.

Why Greenwashing Claims Get Caught

Vague “biodegradable” claims: ASA (UK) and FTC (US) have both ruled that unqualified “biodegradable” is misleading. Compostable materials (PLA, certified bioplastics) contaminate recycling streams. Paper-based packaging is the exception: uncoated kraft is both recyclable and home-compostable.

Is “biodegradable” plastic just a marketing term?

Effectively yes. Without a certified composting standard, “biodegradable” carries no enforceable meaning. Avoid using it as a claim.

What does FSC certification cover — recyclability or sourcing?

FSC certifies sustainable forest sourcing (input) — not end-of-life. FSC-certified packaging can still be unrecyclable if plastic-laminated. Look for FSC + uncoated or FSC + water-based coatings for full lifecycle benefit.

Which standard should appear on my pack?

UK/EU: OPRL “Recyclable” label or TUV OK Compost. US: How2Recycle label or BPI Certified Compostable. Always reference the specific standard, not a generic eco-label.

Does Packjaki produce certified packaging?

Yes — FSC chain-of-custody as standard.
