When the die-cutter trims the sheet, blade tolerance (typically +/- 0.5mm) means a portion of the actual cut may land slightly inside the intended cut line. Without bleed, you get a sliver of unprinted white paper at the edge.

The 3mm bleed is industry standard for paper packaging globally. Some specialty die-cuts (complex curves, internal cut-outs) require 5mm bleed to be safe.

What Is the Safe Zone?

The safe zone is the area INSIDE the cut line by 3mm. Critical content (logos, brand name, regulatory text, barcodes) must stay inside the safe zone. The same die-cut tolerance that can produce white edges (bleed problem) can also cut off the edge of a logo if it sits too close to the cut line.

For text crossing FOLD lines: stay at least 5mm clear of any score line. Text crossing a fold becomes unreadable as the box folds.

Bleed + Safe Zone + Cut Line Diagram (Conceptual)

Outermost line: Bleed line (3mm outside cut line) — background colours/images extend to here

Middle line: Cut line (die-cutter trims here)

Inner line: Safe zone line (3mm inside cut line) — text and logos stay inside

Effectively a 6mm “do not place text here” border running around the perimeter of every box panel.

Crop Marks Explained

Crop marks are small black lines at each corner of the artwork indicating where the cut occurs. Standard crop marks are 6mm long, placed 3mm outside the cut line. They guide the print operator and die-cutter for alignment.

Modern automated workflows often use registration marks instead of traditional crop marks. Your printer’s prepress team will add these if missing — but supply them when possible to reduce setup time and avoid surprises.

Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

Mistake

Result

Fix

No bleed on background colour

White edges on finished box

Extend background 3mm past cut line

Logo placed in safe zone violation

Logo edge cut off after die-cutting

Move logo 3mm minimum inside cut line

Text crossing fold line

Text becomes unreadable when folded

Move text 5mm clear of any score line

Barcode placed across a fold

Barcode unscannable

Place barcode entirely on one panel, 5mm from any fold

RGB instead of CMYK

Colour shift on press

Convert to CMYK before exporting

Linked (not embedded) images

Missing images at press, reprints needed

Embed all images, or supply linked files alongside

Wrong file format

Printer cannot open or rasterises text

Export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 with embedded fonts

How to Set Up Bleed in Adobe Illustrator

File → New → set Bleed value to 3mm on all four edges

Or: Document Setup → Bleed → 3mm

Extend all background fills and images past the artboard edge to the red bleed guideline

Place logos/text at least 3mm inside the artboard edge (safe zone)

Export PDF: Marks and Bleeds → Use Document Bleed Settings → Trim Marks ON → Save as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Packjaki provide dieline files with bleed and safe zones marked?

Yes — every dieline we provide includes a clearly marked bleed line, cut line, score lines, and safe zone. Either way, you lose 1-3 days while you re-supply or approve the workaround.

Do I need bleed on the inside of the box?

Yes — the inside panels are subject to the same die-cut tolerance. Bleed all printed inside surfaces just as you would the outside.

Is 3mm bleed enough for foil stamping?

Yes for standard foil. For foil embossing or foil + die-cut combos, 5mm bleed is safer due to alignment tolerance between multiple passes.

Can the printer add bleed if I forgot?

For simple solid backgrounds — yes, the printer can extend.
